Fire
      Door Inspection

What is it?

A fire door is a door that's designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke within a building, allowing people to escape and giving the fire service time to respond.
Fire doors are a vital part of a building's fire safety strategy and are required by law in public buildings. They are usually rated as either FD30 or FD60, which indicates how long they can withstand fire:

  • FD30
Can withstand fire for up to 30 minutes and is typically used in low-rise residential buildings and offices
  • FD60
Can withstand fire for up to 60 minutes and is typically used in high-rise and commercial buildings.
Fire doors are made with special features to help them resist fire, including:

  • Intumescent seals: Expand to fill the gap between the door and the frame when exposed to heat
  • Smoke seals: Prevent smoke from passing through in the early stages of a fire.
  • Borosilicate or ceramic glass: More fire resistant than standard glass
  • Anti-shattering wire mesh: Can be included in windows
  • Closing mechanism: Usually spring-loaded or hydraulic, this forces the door closed to prevent fire and smoke from passing through
